GMB Union protests recycling cuts

Sheffield Council contracts recycling services out to Veolia, who in turn are now sub-contracting to a charity called SOVA. Profits are still to be made, it seems, while services shrink and workers lose their livelihoods.

The local authority claims that austerity cuts meted out by the UK government mean that recycling workers will lose their jobs – despite a Freedom of Information application by the GMB showing that there is far more than enough money available to keep services running seven days a week and employing workers with proper pay, terms and conditions. (N.B. GMB Union makes it clear in the interview below that they have no “beef” with the good work of the charity SOVA.)
